Additional fees you might encounter When staying at the hotel

May 17, 2024

Once in a lifetime, everyone might experience events or circumstances that entail staying in a hotel.

For those who have never stayed in a hotel before, you may not be aware that besides the "room rate per night," there are other charges associated with staying in a hotel. Some may have stayed multiple times but have never encountered these fees. Today, Hotelsup will discuss three additional charges you may encounter when staying in a hotel.

Deposit or Security Deposit:

Some hotels, regardless of size, may not require a deposit, which is convenient for customers. However, if a hotel does request a deposit, it's essential to know the amount. Different hotels have different policies regarding deposits.

Some hotels may only charge for the key, but this is rare among 5-star establishments.

Others may charge for incidental expenses, such as damages that could occur during your stay, like sofa stains, broken glasses, room service, or minibar consumption. This fee, typically around 500 - 1,000 baht per night, is applied if you've already paid for the room in advance and decide to extend, shorten, or modify your stay.

Requesting Special Services:

You may not be aware that you can request special services when staying at a hotel. You can notify the hotel staff through email, phone, or at check-in.

If you're celebrating a special occasion or have unique requirements, you can request assistance from hotel staff. Depending on the hotel's policy, there may or may not be an additional charge for this service.

Special requests might include items for infants, such as baby cots, bath tubs, or child-sized bedding. Alternatively, if you're traveling with elderly individuals, you might request an adapted room or one equipped for wheelchair users. These rooms may have features like walk-in showers and grab rails in the bathroom to facilitate accessibility. It's advisable to email or call in advance to inform the hotel of your requirements.

Tipping and Service Charges:

Tipping and service charges aren't mandatory but are often appreciated by hotel staff. This gesture reflects the quality of service provided by the staff.

Typically, a service charge of 10% of the room rate is included in the bill. This charge is split among all staff members.

Additionally, there's a 7% value-added tax (VAT) charged by the government on hotel services.

In summary, in addition to the room rate, there may be other charges associated with staying in a hotel. Each hotel has its own policies regarding these charges, so it's essential to inquire directly with the hotel.
